By: Roxie Graham-Marski Posted at: 03/26/2013 07:09 AM
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A symposium at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will discuss the causes and consequences of school consolidation in rural parts of the state.

The university's Center for Great Plains Studies will host the public event on April 5-6.

The symposium will address both the benefits and pitfalls of school consolidation, its effect on students, and efforts to sustain rural communities.

Speakers will include Gov. Dave Heineman, education consultant Marty Strange, and several school district superintendents and university deans.

More than one-third of U.S. children attend school in rural areas or small towns.
