(Neb.)- Bill Would Restrict Cell Use By School Bus Drivers
By: Jeremy Anderson Posted at: 02/26/2013 02:19 PM LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A state lawmaker wants Nebraska to prohibit school bus drivers from using cell phones while their vehicles are moving.
Sen. Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids said Tuesday that Nebraska should join 19 other states and the District of Columbia in banning the practice. Sullivan told the Legislature's Transportation and Telecommunications Committee that her bill would apply to school buses that contract with school districts, or directly with parents.
Texting while driving is already illegal in Nebraska. The state Department of Education has also approved a rule that requires school bus drivers to pull to the side of the road if they want to use a wireless device, but Sullivan says lawmakers should put it in statute to be clear.
