(Chadron)-DSSFF representative Steve Cleveland announced that the Fund has purchased 18,000 steel fence posts for $75,000. The posts will be donated to private property owners in Dawes, Sioux, Sheridan and Box Butte Counties who lost a combined 650 miles of fences in the 2012 wildfires. Cleveland said, “the steel posts will provide some temporary relief and may help get damaged fence up off the ground. But, 18,000 posts is a fraction of the estimated 208,000 posts damaged in the wildfires.”
County assessment teams have assessed fencing losses and have prepared the initial allocation of the posts. Property owners can begin picking up posts on February 1, 2013 at distributors in their county of residence. Distribution of the posts will be handled by White River Feed and Supply for fencing in Dawes and Box Butte Counties. The distribution point for Sheridan County is at Farmers Coop in Hay Springs and for Sioux County is Herron Brothers Lumber in Harrison.
Cleveland noted that the Fund has held back a number of posts for property owners that were not included or overlooked in the initial allocation. Property owners who lost fences should check with the distributor in their county of residence and, if their name was not on the initial list, fill out a “request for assistance form”. The final allocation of posts is planned to be wrapped up in March.
Those who wish to contribute to the fund may mail contributions to the Dawes-Sioux-Sheridan Fire Fund, P.O. Box 1125, Chadron, NE 69337.
