By: Jeremy Anderson Posted at: 01/09/2013 11:23 AM

(Chadron)-According to health officials 2012 was the worst year for whooping cough since 1955. 42,000 cases were reported nation wide and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that number could possibly reach 50,000.

Public Relations Director for Chadron Community Hospital, Lea Griese, says that the hospitals director of nurses repotred no cases of whooping cough this past year.

Experts say that last years whooping cough cycle appears to have been its peak. Deaths from the disease were down in 2012 to 18. Reports say that one reason for a decrease in deaths has been due to quicker diagnosis from doctors.
