ALLIANCE, Neb. (AP) - Alliance has shut down one of its water wells due to high levels of arsenic.
The city water department was notified by the Nebraska Department of Health that the arsenic level in the well exceeded the drinking water standard. The health department says there is no immediate risk but the city is notifying customers.
City Water Superintendent Mike Hulquist says the well was blended with water from other wells and he doesn't believe the limit was exceeded in the distribution system.
According to the health department, arsenic is naturally present in the environment and may occur as a by-produce of agricultural and industrial activities.
