(CHADRON)-Chadron police department 911 director Tony Serbousek says mandatory evacuations have been put into effect from the city dams south to the Red Cloud Campground on both sides of the highway. Fire public information officer Patty Bean says residents with pets are asked to take their small pets with them. If they have larger animals, they are asked to notify law enforcement. Law enforcement officials are informing individuals at each residence that they need to evacuate. Also, both lanes of Highway 385 has been closed until further notice.
Officials say the wind was expected to pick up about 1:00 p.m., which is about the time that the fire took off. Officials are afraid it might pop over the highway onto the other side. Fire crews have put in an order for a heavy air tanker to make water drops on the fire. Bean says people may see more helicopter traffic in the area as three more helicopters are anticipated in the area by tomorrow. The area currently has three working the fires.
