(CHADRON)-Attendance was up at Saturday’s second-annual Cook-Out for a Cause event sponsored by Helen’s Pancake and Steak House, according to Helen’s manager Janelle Winkelman. Winkelman said 15 griller groups showed up to donate their time and food in an effort to earn money for their individual causes. Participants paid $15 a person or $20 a couple to sample food from each booth and then vote on their favorite grilled specialty.
Terry Williamson won first place honors for the second year in a row with his barbeque ribs. His cause, Ronald McDonald House, will receive $883 as a result of his efforts.
Winkelman said approximately 475 people attended the cook-out, up from last year’s inaugural event of about 300. Since the event was so well attended, Winkelman says every group’s cause will receive some money this year. Bauerkemper’s of Chadron came in second with their brisket, and their cause will receive $583. The Chadron State College Ag Club and their roasted hog took third place, receiving $383 for their cause. Between the proceeds from lighted glasses that were being sold at the event and workers who volunteered to donate their tips from the evening, Winkelman says those who took fourth, fifth, and sixth places will each receive $263 for their causes, and it is yet to be determined how much the additional groups will receive for their causes.
Winkelman says a lot of appreciation goes out to everyone who donated their time and money and helped what she calls “a great community event” successfully raise money for a variety of good causes a second year in a row.
