(S.D.)-Firefighters Continue Battling Blazes On Rosebud Reservation
By: Roxie Graham-Marski Posted at: 07/25/2012 08:08 AM ROSEBUD, S.D. (AP) - Firefighters are up against excruciating heat and low humidity as they continue to battle several wildfires on the Rosebud Indian Reservation Tuesday.
Nine helicopters and air tankers are dropping water on the fires, which have engulfed more than 62 square miles, or 40,000 acres. Nearly 600 personnel are working to contain the fire.
Lightning strikes started numerous fires on the reservation last week. Rosebud Sioux President Rodney Bordeaux has declared a state of emergency and requested state and federal aid.
One community on the reservation, Spring Creek, is still under an evacuation notice.
The fires are among several dotting the state. Recent drought conditions have helped fueled the blazes.
