(CHADRON)-The husband-wife team of Chris and Julie Garrett of Chadron won its sixth Fur Trade Days Regatta championship at Chadron State Park on Sunday. The Garretts retained the trophy for the annual canoe race by defeating Leslie Bargen and Justin Haag of Chadron in the finals. The Garretts posted a 20-second victory in the final heat with a time of 2:42. The 2:36 they posted in the preliminaries was the day’s best performance.
A total of eight teams participated in the Regatta’s canoe races. The race challenges participants to carry canoes down the bank of the park’s lagoon, mount their vessels and navigate their way around the pond while fending off another team. As usual, a number of Sunday’s participants fell victim to the challenging start and rigors of the course, capsizing before reaching the finish line.
The event is sponsored by the Chadron Kiwanis club. It also featured paddleboat races for children, in which no placings were awarded.
