(Neb.)-Fire Officials Urge Extreme Caution With Fireworks

By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 06/28/2012 11:24 AM

Joint press release from Tristan Fluharty, Fire Management Officer, Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands; Doak Nickerson, District Forester, Nebraska Forest Service; Pat Gould, Deputy State Fire Marshall and Chadron Volunteer Fire Department Chief; and Brian Prosser, Crawford Volunteer Fire Department Chief

(Chadron)-Fire officials are warning folks to exercise extreme caution with fireworks and all ignition sources throughout the weekend and Fourth of July holiday.  Conditions are exceptionally dry with predictions of continued record-breaking temperatures, and possible thunderstorm activity.

Several large and uncontrolled Wildland and timber fires are burning in surrounding states.  Tristan Fluharty, Fire Management Officer for the Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands said,  “It is extremely dry and we are asking for everyone’s help to prevent accidental fires.”

Doak Nickerson of Nebraska Forest Service said, “Conditions are dangerous and everyone needs to be careful.  I’d also like to remind the public that most firefighters are volunteers taking time off work and their personal lives.  We need to be respectful of that because it looks like they will have a long fire season this year.”
