(Chadron)-If you thought it was hot outside on Tuesday, then you were right! According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, several places in the KCSR listening area broke record high temperatures for June 26.
Chadron’s high temperature of 109 broke the previous record set in 1974 of 101. It also breaks the all-time record for the month of June. The previous record was 108 degrees set on June 29, 2002.
Other hot spots included Sidney at 111. The previous high was 101 from 1979. Oddly enough, the record high for the month was set on June 25, 2012, at 109 degrees. Scottsbluff had a record high of 106, breaking the 1974 record of 102, and tying the record high for June.
South Dakota broke some records as well, with East Rapid City at 106, breaking the 1931 record of 101; Lead reaching “only” 96, breaking their previous record of 94 set in 1980; and Fort Meade heating up to 102, barely breaking a record of 101 set in 1974. Gillette, WY, also barely broke their record of 101 by hitting 102. That record was set in 1980.
Two locations tied records. Hot Springs 104 tied that high from 1974, and Valentine tied their 105 high from 1971. Cooler temperatures are now expected for several days. Normally highs in the 90s wouldn’t be welcome, but after consecutive days of triple digit heat, most area residents consider this good news.
