(Neb.) - Nebraska corn rated below last year's at this date

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Farmers have been irrigating row crops in Nebraska to offset the hot and dry conditions in much of the state.
    
The U.S. Department of Agriculture report for the week ending Sunday says the high heat and limited rain across central and western Nebraska have stressed crops and pastureland. There have been replantings of dry beans in some areas of the Panhandle because of hail damage, and grasshoppers are a concern as well.
    
The report says 5 percent of the state's corn has silked. Corn conditions as of Sunday were rated 60 percent good to excellent, compared with 78 percent good to excellent last year at this date.
    
Soybean conditions were rated as 57 percent good to excellent, well below the 80 percent last year and the average of 79 percent.
