(Neb.)-Chadron High School Considers Changing Graduation Day  Listen

By: Roxie Graham-Marski Posted at: 06/11/2012 10:33 PM

(CHADRON)-The graduation ceremony at Chadron High School may be changing from Sunday to Saturday next year. The change request was brought to high school staff by a parent group. Principal Jerry Mack said one reason for the change includes wanting Mother’s Day to be a day of rest, instead of a busy day full of work. In addition to that, school superintendent Caroline Winchester says, “You know, you have school the next day. They were talking about when you have people that travel from a distance, giving them more time to return home. Those were some of the parent concerns.”
Winchester said the school has checked its activities calendar, and that Saturday is open. Also, school staff appear to be on board with changing from Sunday to Saturday. Winchester says in considering the change, there is always a possibility for conflicts. “You’re so limited to Saturdays or Sundays,” she says. “And it’s really hard not to conflict with another school or college graduations even. We do need to verify with the college that it would be available on Saturday as opposed to Sunday. And then Mr. Mack is planning on sending a survey out to the senior parents to see how they feel about it before making a final decision.”
If changes are made, the date for graduation would be Saturday, May 11, 2013, instead of Sunday, May 12.
