(Neb.) - Wrecker's Roadhouse adds breathalyzer
By: John Thayer Posted at: 05/08/2012 08:05 PM CHADRON - Introducing the AlcoScan AL3500, a vending breathalyzer that will give you an idea of your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) before you decide to get behind the wheel.
It is a simple, quick test.
Insert a dollar in the side of the machine and listen to the instructions. When instructed insert a straw in the top of the machine and then the machine provides a countdown from three. At the end of the countdown blow for three seconds and then wait for your results.
The machine will not only tell your what your BAC is, a light will brighten on "Good", "Warning" or "Bad."
The factory settings on the machine are as follows:
- Good - less than .02
- Warning - .02-.05
- Bad - greater than .05
Although the machine is police grade it clearly states that the best way to tell your BAC accurately is a blood test. It also says even though the "Good" light comes on it still may not be safe to drive.
The machine also offers some rules:
- Wait at least 20 minutes after eating or drinking anything before testing.
- Do not blow smoke, saliva or other contaminants into the mouthpiece.
- Do not use this device as a tool to drink and drive.
The machine should be used for screening purposes and should be used as a guide for self-monitoring only.
So why add the machine to the establishment?
"The reasoning is to give people a tool to test themselves," said Temple Garman. "We hope to make people stop and think and maybe prevent them from driving when they shouldn't."
It's sure to turn into a game to see who can get the highest reading, but before you go for the high score make sure you have a designated driver.
It is just a dollar. It's a simple test. And perhaps a dollar and a minute that could keep you out of jail.
