(Neb.) - Crawford woman seeks honors for slain soldiers (Updated)
By: John Thayer Posted at: 02/23/2012 08:16 AM CRAWFORD, Neb. (AP) - A Crawford woman wants Nebraska's Gov. Dave Heineman to order the lowering of flags statewide whenever a Nebraskan dies while on military duty.
Lory Storm is encouraging Nebraskans to push the governor into changing the flag policy so flags are lowered not just in the soldier's hometown.
Storm says the death of Marine Sgt. Jeremiah Callahan, of Chadron, in a California traffic accident on Feb. 14, should be noted statewide even if he didn't die in combat.
A Chadron funeral for Callahan is scheduled for Saturday.
Heineman spokeswoman Jen Rae Hein says the governor's office works with communities on the lowering of flags. She also says that policy is reviewed periodically with members of the military, such as leaders of the Nebraska National Guard.
