(Neb.)-Chadron Mayor John Chizek and Vice Mayor Steve Duncan Recalled
(Chadron)- The unofficial results are in. Chadron Mayor John Chizek and Vice Mayor Steve Duncan have been recalled from their positions. Total ballots voting yes for the recall of Mayor Chizek totaled 690, while ballots voting no tallied 474. Ballots cast in favor of the recall of Vice Mayor Duncan totaled 626, and the no vote tallied 521. The results will be reviewed on Friday by the canvass to make sure the counts are accurate. They will certify the results and deem them official on Friday.
Polls were open until 7:00 p.m. tonight, and then the counting began. Votes were tabulated by precinct and do not reflect provisional votes. Assistant Dawes County Clerk Deb Lesmeister speculated that there were approximately 15 provisional votes, so they will likely not change the outcome.
Once the results are finalized and made official on Friday, the information will turned back over to the remaining members of the city council. The council will then be responsible for soliciting new interests, taking applications, and appointing a new mayor and vice mayor to fill the vacant positions.
Lesmeister said that 3,434 voters were eligible to vote in the recall election, with 1,164 votes tabulated for Chizek and 1,147 votes for Duncan, reflecting an approximate voter turnout of 33 percent. Costs for the recall election will be billed to the city.
