(Neb.)-Recall Petitions Circulating In Chadron
(Chadron)-Petitions are currently being circulated throughout Chadron to recall the mayor and vice mayor after claims that those individuals have not acted in the best interests of the City of Chadron. Dr. Robert Penor filed the request for the petitions earlier this year, and Mayor John Chizek and Vice Mayor Steve Duncan had a chance to submit a defense statement before the petitions could be circulated.
Dawes County Clerk Cheryl Feist said both men did submit their statements, and those will be included in the petitions that are circulated. Feist said Penor has until July 28 to gather 265 valid signatures for each individual. Once the signatures are returned to her office, Feist and her staff will have 15 days to verify those signatures. If the number of valid signatures is equal to or greater than 265, Feist said she will notify the City of Chadron they have between 30 and 45 days to conduct a recall election if the Mayor and Vice Mayor do not resign within 5 days.
The petition will have the reason for the attempted recall for each individual, the circulator’s name, individual subject to recall and their defense statement all printed in red. Each sheet has room for 20 signatures, and Feist said she gave Penor 20 pages for each person, which would be more than enough room for the required signatures.
