(Chadron)-A rural Dawes County resident has indicated a family pet was attacked by a mountain lion sometime this week, but details of the incident are somewhat sketchy. The animal, a dog around 4 years of age, did survive the attack, but is currently undergoing treatment at a local veterinary clinic. Family members have said the vet confirmed the attack on the dog was done by a mountain lion.
Dan Kling with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said this recent attack was not reported to his office, but he would like to obtain more information so his office can determine if the lion is a threat to other livestock or pets in the area.
The owners discovered their dog had been attacked either late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, but believe the attack may have happened sometime on Tuesday. A piece of flesh had been torn from the dog’s back, exposing bone, and it is unknown if the dog will be able to recover from those injuries. The incident was reported to have happened south of Crawford near Belmont. As more information is gained regarding the incident, we will pass that along to our listeners.
