(Chadron)-The Chadron Police Department received several reports over the weekend regarding mountain lions in the Chadron area. One report was received of lion tracks on the east edge of town, while another report on the south edge of a sighting.
According to Chadron Police Lieutenant Rick Hickstein, the department is in contact with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to investigate these reports. They hope to have some concrete information soon. These reports HAVE NOT been confirmed by either the Police Department or the Game and Parks.
Jeff Hoffman with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission offered advice to anyone coming face to face with a lion, also known as a cougar. Hoffman said individuals should make themselves appear as large as possible, and if the subject is wearing a coat, to open it up. He also said to back away slowly, so as not to trigger the cat’s chase instinct, and not make eye contact.
