(S.D.) - Mountain Lion Tranquilized Near Pine Ridge

By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 04/27/2010 03:31 PM

PINE RIDGE, SD – A South Dakota family was startled this morning (Tuesday) when they discovered a mountain lion had taken residence underneath one of their vehicles. According to Rob Goodman, Biologist with the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Authority, the male mountain lion was spotted at a residence 8 miles east of Pine Ridge at approximately 7 o’clock this morning.
Goodman said a team of biologists and rangers responded to the family’s initial call and were able to successfully sedate the animal. Goodman also said the cat, who is estimated to be 3-years-old, showed no signs of aggression, and was also very relaxed. After being darted shortly after 9:30 a.m., the team was able to do a field assessment before loading up the animal and relocating him to a different area.
Although the lion was discovered in a rural area, Goodman says it was odd for him to be there, as there were no trees or a nearby creek.
