(Wyo.)-State says CHIP Information Exposed on Web

By: Chad Franzen Posted at: 02/06/2010 06:52 AM

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming Department of Health says the personal information of about 9,000 children in the state's children's health insurance program could have been exposed on the Internet.

Department officials said Friday that the error resulted in the names, birthdays, Social Security numbers, addresses and phone numbers of Kid Care CHIP participants being accessible on an unsecured Web page for months.

Officials say they learned of the problem Thursday and secured the information immediately.

Department officials are still investigating but say the unsecured files were accessed 94 times, including in the course of department business. No misuse of children's personal information has been reported.

The department has contracted with a credit-monitoring firm to assist families whose information could have been exposed. The firm, Debix, can be reached starting Saturday morning at 877-676-0371.
