(Neb.)-Cydney Janssen To Fill Chadron School Board Opening

By: Chad Franzen Posted at: 02/03/2010 07:12 PM

The Chadron Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted, Wednesday, to appoint Cydney Janssen to fill the opening on the school board.

Janssen, a Chadron resident and Forest Service employee, was chosen from a pool of four candidates, which also included Tom Menke, Dave Carlson, and Hank McCallum.

McCallum interviewed for the opening in January.  Janssen, Menke and Carlson took turns answering six questions on Wednesday night.

Janssen said she believes a school board member has a role of governance, and helps make short and long-term planning goals. She said it is important for a school board member to understand policy, standard operating procedures, and discipline. She said it is also important to possess good listening and communication skills, an awareness of what kind of educational experiences students are getting elsewhere, and an understanding of collective bargaining.

She said she believes Chadron schools strengths lie in the quality of their educators, and the influence of nearby Chadron State College.

Menke said he desired to serve on the board in order to “make a difference for my kids.” He said many of his neighbors share his values, and he wanted to see those values represented. Carlson said he had served previously on a rural school board for 12 years.

Board president Charles Kuskie told the candidates, once they had finished interviewing, “This is a good group, it really is. I hope that you all will consider running for the board.”

Janssen has already filed for election to the school board. She replaces Dave Noble, who resigned in December. Her current term will expire in January.
