RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Two airmen from Ellsworth Air Force Base have been honored for heroic actions in Southwest Asia.
Master Sgts. Alan Andrews and Michael Wingler were awarded Air Force Commendation Medals for helping save the lives of an air crew and preventing the loss of a B-1B Lancer on Jan. 18.
Officials say a tire and brake on the bomb-laden aircraft started on fire after the plane made an emergency landing. Andrews and Wingler ordered the four-person air crew to evacuate and put out the blaze.
Andrews and Wingler are with the 379th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.
