(Wyo.)-Freudenthal Proposes Wind Energy Excise Tax

By: Chad Franzen Posted at: 02/01/2010 11:06 AM

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Gov. Dave Freudenthal is proposing an excise tax on wind energy production in Wyoming, with 60 percent of revenues going to the state and 40 percent to local governments.

Freudenthal was set to discuss his goals for legislation related to wind development at a news conference Monday.

In a news release, Freudenthal outlined a proposal for a $3 per megawatt hour excise tax on wind energy.

He also says Wyoming should suspend condemnation of private lands for the construction of wind energy collector lines and begin a legislative study of the issue.

Freudenthal also supports two proposals by the Legislature's Task Force on Wind Energy. Those would establish statewide minimum county standards for wind projects and expand the Industrial Siting

Act to cover more wind farms.
