(Neb.)-Fire Engulfs West Plains Grain Elevator in Chadron

By: Chad Franzen Posted at: 12/22/2009 10:21 AM

The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department was battling a massive fire at West Plains Grain Elevator on West 1st Street, in Chadron, by 6:15 this morning.

Flames had engulfed the wood part of the elevator by 6:45, as that part of the facility was completely ablaze. Chadron Police Lieutenant Rick Hickstein, who was at the scene, said the police department received a call about the fire at about 6 am.
Residents in the area had to evacuate their homes, out of fear that fuel tanks in the area might be explosive, but the residents were allowed to return within a few hours.

By 9:30 a.m., the fire continued to burn inside the elevator, but firefighters had made significant progress in calming and controlling the fire.
By 1:30 p.m. the elevator was still smoldering, as firefighters continued to spray it with water.  Smoke billowed from the remains.
By 4:30 p.m., firefighters had stopped spraying the fire, though it continued to smolder in a limited area within the grain elevator.
An investigation into what may have started the blaze is expected to begin on Wednesday.
