(Neb.)-Jury Sees Knives, Pictures of Wounds in Murder Trial

By: Chad Franzen Posted at: 11/04/2009 12:41 PM

Three witnesses took the stand, this morning, at the Dawes County Courthouse, in the murder trial of Joseph Hotz. Hotz is accused of killing his former Chadron State College roommate, 22-year-old Kenneth Pfeiffer, last December.

Dr. Peter Schilke, a pathologist from Western Pathology Consultants in Scottsbluff, testified to the autopsy he performed on Pfeiffer. He said toxicology results yielded use of hallucinogenic mushrooms and marijuana, by Pfeiffer, before he died.

Dr. Schilke counted 51 sharp force injuries, which are stab or incisor wounds.  Photos of all 51 wounds, labeled with masking tape and marker, were shown to the jury. Schilke estimated that four of the stab wounds could have been potentially fatal.

Among the potentially fatal wounds were a six-inch stab wound to the right upper chest, which hit Pfeiffer’s lung, and a stab wound to the back of the head which damaged the base of Pfeiffer’s brain and the top of his spinal cord.

Colton Willard, a junior Chadron State, testified that he was a friend of both Hotz and Pfeiffer. He said he had been at the location of the alleged incident, 935 Shelton, prior to the incident taking place. He said Hotz and Pfeiffer were both there, along with 4 or 5 other friends.  He said neither Hotz nor Pfeiffer were acting strange or weird during the approximate 45 minutes he had been there. He said he and the other friends left the house, because they thought Hotz and Pfeiffer were going to visit Hotz’s parents.

Criminal investigator, David Kleensang, with the State Patrol testified to the condition of the alleged murder scene, and to the alleged weapons.

He showed photos of walls and doorways which were stained with blood. The wood work in the door ways had gouges in them, which he said were recent.

He also revealed two knives he found at 802 Bordeaux, later that night, one of which was a dagger with a 6 ½ inch double edged blade, the other was a bowie knife whose blade appeared to be an estimated 8 inches long.
