(Neb.)-Help Change Young Peoples Lives by Opening Your Home

By: Nick Jakusz Posted at: 08/07/2009 10:33 AM

CHADRON - “Life isn’t always fair and sometimes young people find themselves in a situation where they have to get out of the house,” Linn Ainslie, Host Home Outreach Specialist for Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska said. “Maybe they are trying to escape an abusive situation, maybe they made some bad choices, maybe they’ve runaway, or been kick out of their home, whatever the reason they need someone to care. That is where we come in and we need help.”

Host Home Outreach Services is a program offered by Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska that offers a local safe home for runaway or homeless youth to stay on a temporary basis. This allows the youth to continue with his/her education in the school they attend, and time for the youth and their family to receive counseling.

“We need host homes,” Ainslie said. “The need is growing, but we are looking for people to say, ‘we’ll help, we’ll be a host home for a young person in need’.”

A home stay will be on a short-term basis, up to 14 days. Under special circumstances the stay could extend to 21 days. Host Homes provide a safe home environment, bed, food, and transportation to school and appointments.

*While the young person is in the host home they also can receive counseling, mentoring, drug/alcohol screening, pregnancy and STD testing and support, job search and support from Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska. They will also receive continued contact and support after leaving the Host Home.

“This is a program that can radically change lives for the good,” Ainslie said. “We need people to come on board with us and help change lives by being a Host Home.”
