From: parents need to be heard   03/09/2010 08:49 PM
Anyone want to place a bet on if parents are really heard when asked about the reconfiguration? My guess is no. Parents have already voiced concerns. But the school board president does not want to hear them. The two elementary school principals don't want to either. Why are these principals putting in the time to see if a schedule will work if it is not a done deal? Charlie...you make no sense. This seems like a huge set up by administration, the superintendent and the school board president. THis is not what is best for the kids! Look up reconfiguration of schools online. Not all its cracked up to be. I hope the school board proves me wrong. But, with a school board president that likes to pooh pooh parents, it looks like it we won't be heard.

Jason Are you mad because you got a ticket?? Get over yourself. Police cars parked in front of Angelas (no one is allowed to eat?) Have you not heard of a working lunch? STOP signs...really? You are getting your panties in a bunch over stop signs. Lordino is doing a fine job. I am glad he is the chief!

From: To Jason   03/09/2010 12:51 PM
I'm just guessing, but they probably had to do a state study at 385 and 20 because they are state highways and have to have the state's blessing where as Sixth and Main is all city streets. I'm guessing from Lt. Hickstein's previous comments about the accidents there last summer if it were up to the city we would already have lights at 385 and 20 as well. As for you not being contacted about the signs at Sixth and Main, I had to laugh...were you contacted about any of the stop signs in town? or how about when they changed the speed limit on West Tenth? sometimes Jason the city council has to make choices without contacting every citizen, that's why we elect someone to the job, so we don't have to have a general election on every day to day decision that needs to be made. If you don't like it, run for office or vote against them.

From: Rock   03/09/2010 12:37 PM
Jason: Perhaps Chief Lordino knows just a wee bit more about traffic control than you do. By the way, what is your work background (if you have one).

From: Rock   03/09/2010 11:55 AM
Jason: Did you have issues with stop signs as a child? It'll be o.k.

From: Chadron or Harrison City Councilman Penor?   03/08/2010 01:32 PM
It seems odd to me that Dr. Penor would run for Chadron City Council. Three out of four vehicles parked in his driveway are licensed in Sioux County. The one that is licensed in Dawes Co. is the classic that he has had tarped there for years. I could maybe understand the 4 wheel drives being liscensed in Sioux County since he has a ranch there, but the BMW? Doesn't the law say that they are to be licensed where they are at 90% of the time? If he is in Sioux County that much, how can he do justice to the City of Chadron as a Councilman?

From: I wonder....   03/08/2010 12:29 PM
I wonder if Jason maybe once worked for chief Lordino and maybe didn't see eye to eye with him That would explain some of his remarks toward the chief, and the city. He's such a fan of the sheriff. Are these remarks coming from the sheriff's office?

From: Jason   03/08/2010 09:52 AM
First place I have a job but if I did not that is not your business Nancy. By your logic only those without jobs should be able to post thier opinions on here. I do not have a problem with a stop sign I have a problem with how it was inacted by the city council. Why do we have a study needed for 385 and highway 20 but 23 people sign a petition and it is made so without any chance for comments from the public. I for one never was contacted about the situation at that particular corner. First I and many others learned of the plans was when Lt Hickstien brought it to the bobbing heads for thier blessing. Funny how quick they got the signs in place and it was made so. Maybe the fix was in long before it went to the council and just needed them to say yes. Think about it folks.

From: Tracy   03/08/2010 09:14 AM
I thought everyone did a great job at the Spring Show, however, I did see something on Sunday that disturbed me. While all vendors had to pay for their booths and advertise their products or themselves, Lois Chizek chose to walk in and start handing out cards asking people to vote for her without paying to do so. I was glad that they caught her and asked her to leave. I do not think this untrustworthy person needs to be Dawes County Treasurer.

From: Nancy   03/07/2010 06:32 PM
Jason--PLEASE get a life or at the very least a job. You have way too much time on your hands and you are such a negative person. I think Chief Lordino has done an excellent job and Chadron is very lucky to have him.

From: Dani Hudson   03/07/2010 04:18 PM
A stop sign....big deal! I don't get why some make something as insignificant as a stop sign a big deal. Not that stop sign aren't important. Most of you get where I'm coming from!

From: wilma eaton   03/07/2010 12:20 PM
to Jason, You must not have any small children that have to cross Main street to go to school, or the swimming pool in the summer. A four way stopo 24/7 has been needed there for many years, and I for one am glad that the Chief of Police and the City manager see the need also. Thanks Sandy & Tim, our kids should be much safer now.

Guest Book patrons, I just attended a training course on illegal drugs. It was shocking to say the least. Through the training program, I discovered that drugs are no different, these days, than the modern mentality of fast-food restaurants and espresso bars in this respect: everybody wants their order to be either super sized or overly potent. Therefore, drugs have mutated into extremely dangerous substances and unnervingly addictive. This is a serious problem worldwide but especially prevalent in America. I asked the instructor why marijuana was still deemed illegal. His reply was that even it has been genetically modified and is now four to six times more potent than forty years ago. He added that today’s modified marijuana basically makes its users abnormally lazy and nonproductive. And, what do you with a gaggle of people who will not work and participate as responsible citizens. No society wants to be burdened with such needless and dysfunctional decadence. However, let us not dismiss the fact that many [legal] pharmaceutical drugs have similar effects. Furthermore, alcohol is a liquid drug and is still deemed as the most common substance used for date rape. Regardless, whether drugs are deemed legal or illegal, America has become a drug crazed quagmire. Is it not obvious that we desperately need to return to our spiritual roots and abnegate from this bedlam of insanity and despair?

Another proposal jammed through by the Chief of Chadron. With 23 members of the community wanting a change it is clear the real push behind this was the chief. He always knows what is best for the rest of us. I suggest we put a stop sign at every corner on Main Street to ensure we are safe from each other. How about it Lordino? It will give your officers more to do then sit at Angela's at noon on a Friday afternoon. (Three cop cars parked there today)

To in the chadron schools I believe that Roberta may have had some facts jumbled. I hope the next time she decides to speak out she ensures she has the facts. I also think that she was voicing her opinion. So she got on her soap box. Read between the lines. It sounds like she is saying that there may be some issues that need addressed by the Chadron City Schools. I took it as she is concerned about the reconfiguration of the schools, Bullying, Reading program and integrity of the administraion. Sometimes a person has to look past the emotion and see if he can find what the problem is. These items are valid items of concern. All I believe Roberta is guilty of is her mis information about Gering and Alliance. The rest is what it is. Concerns that should concern parents and citizens. AJ

Guest Book patrons, as Americans, we need to reestablish schools of faith. There is no excuse for secular education to dominate this arena. I realize that there are many fabulous teachers within public school systems; however, they are impeded with some serious limitations of which prohibit prayer, the mention of Christ, and acknowledgement of the supernatural. In the past there were much higher standards in parochial schools. In fact, the students had to undergo extensive grammar instruction, etiquette discipline, and spiritual advancement classes, just to name a few. As a rhetorical question, have you wondered why ministers bear the scepter as public speakers and demonstrate the most exquisite social decorum? Citizens, we need to make some positive changes in America. Our society has become so filled with hate that it is intolerable for a human to endure.

Please accept my appology to you, and everyone else to whom this has happened. I understand another sticker was placed on some property of The Heritage Grill. That kind of advertising is not my style and I ask all my supporters to obtain permission from any property owner before placing any campaign advertising anywhere. I will make everyt attempt to prevent this from happening again.

From: To Roberta   02/25/2010 09:43 PM
Roberta - I think you need to check some facts. Alliance still has the school configuration, and Gering has never had a school configuaration like what Chadron is proposing. My nephew went to school in Gering and they have never had anything like this. Are you in the school system? What is your actual gripe? Have you ever heard the phrase "you spot it you got it"? I believe all the teacher's have had some of this training. If you're only going to look at the bad at a person's job and not acknowledge any of the good the school and the people in the school have tried to do, then what does that say about you as a teacher or a person, Roberta? Our scores have seen improvement in reading, writing and other areas. That is always good! And, maybe everything is not perfect - wake up - it's not perfect anywhere. I'll take Chadron over a lot of places! Those that want to see improvement will find the good and try to improve. This school reconfiguation is barely in the beginning stages. It makes sense to have schools be grade specific, and a lot of schools in Nebraska do have this. Research them and look at the positive and negatives in those systems. Chadron teacher's could learn something about research and observations on other systems in the state of Nebraska. What is truly best for our children? Yes, I am in the school system but not either of the elementary schools. That narrows it down to 6 others for you Roberta. Think before you blow up!

Oh please Papa Smurf! You really think the other city council members want to sit around and listen to Mr. Applegarth's blah, blah, blah? They would never get anything accomplished at their meetings because they would have to look up every word that came out of his mouth!

From: Don   02/25/2010 08:22 AM

From: Papa Smurf   02/25/2010 05:54 AM
Mr. Applegarth: Perhaps you should run for City Council and show the good citizens of Chadron how a properly run goverment should work. I believe you could get the votes.

From: Roberta   02/25/2010 03:08 AM
I am a concerned citizen of this town. What is happening at our schools? When did it become ok to put politics ahead of our kids education? Pay attention to this reconfiguration that a few are talking about. This superintendent is leaving in 3 months or so and he is wanting to supstantially change things. Why would he even care? Thats his job some may say. Really? He hasn't shown "CARE" since he got into the position. The man has not shown care when he put our kids lives at risk when we had that bad wind storm 5 years ago. He was told that the roof blew off of Kenwood. He would not close the school until he personally saw it. Even then he took his own sweet time to cancel it. There have been snow storms that he should have canceled school...but chose not to. Then there are the bus issues. Sending our kids on a bus that is known to have those electrical problems. Seriously! How about our kids education? That has not been a priority. He only listens to a select few that have their own agendas and scares the rest of the teaching staff by hiring bullies to keep them in line and not give opinions. Be careful....you will get transfered to another school. I do not think any major changes should be allowed to happen while this man is still on the payroll. He should only be allowed to maintain what mess he has made. This man is a smoke and mirrors guy. He likes to distract people from real issues...hedge the answer to the question. Tell partial truths. I can't believe he is was hired 6 years ago. Thanks to whoever was in charge of that one! This reconfiguration is exactly what Gering did. Take a look at Alliance. They did it too. What happened? Alliance is no longer doing this....and we are following Gerings path. Yes I said Following it! There is some love relationship between some of our administration and Lynette from Gering. WE are supposed to be leaders in education not the joke we are right now. Don't let this administration sweet talk us into making a decission that we may regreat! While you are at it...check out the reading program that is in the elementary school...and the middle school. It is really quite disheartening that we are treating our children like that! Talk about snoozeville! Our kids are losing interest in school. Why? Administration failing them. Not the teachers...administrators. It starts at the top!

From: Hoop Shoot   02/25/2010 12:00 AM
If all of you who are voicing concern over the hoop shoot are really concerned, why not volunteer to take over it and give back to the community? Even though many of the CSC team members are not from the community, they are still part of the community for approximately four years!

From: Reply   02/24/2010 08:10 PM
Although no players are from the community the women's basketball coach was born and raised in Chadron. He played in this event when he was in junior high and his parents, who still live here, were the creators of the Pine Ridge Hoop Shoot!! I bet he will do everything he can to ensure that some of the proceeds are given back to the community. Also, to say the community won't benefit without a donation is crazy. Talk to the motel owners, resteraunt/fastfood owners, gas station owners, and other local businesses and ask them the impact that this event has on them.

From: also sad   02/24/2010 07:39 PM
I don't know how the college basketball teams got the hoop shoot. I assumed it was because no one else wanted to step up and take over for the Mclains. I could be wrong, and it was looked upon as a money maker the basketball teams. I have read the info on it, and I assume the community will not be involved in helping with it now. It was one of the things that was very cool about Chadron-Kids playing for Kids.

From: Unbelieveable   02/24/2010 01:05 PM
The CSC basketball teams are in charge of the event now. Which no one on either roster is from the community of Chadron. So it goes from an event ran by locals for locals, to outsiders within an organization that will have completed a multi-million dollar fund raisier, which part of that is to build a new athletic complex. I really hope they donate some back to the community, but it isn't looking like that.

From: Joseph Applegarth   02/24/2010 11:57 AM
Guest Book patrons, the time has come for political candidates to vie for office. Please remember that these individuals are required to take an oath of office to defend our American Constitution. However, most citizens have no idea about many of the rights defined therein. Therefore, if many of our elected officials are unfamiliar with these invaluable rights, then how are they going to protect them let alone preserve these noble bastions of our liberty? The Constitution was designed to protect us from de facto governments, bureaucracies, and corporations that are inherently and predictably rapacious when undisciplined. I would like to suggest that all incumbents be obligated to study the American Constitution and Bill of Rights and therefore be required to pass a proficiency test prior to taking their oath of office. If they are required to do this, we will see many governmental abuses come to an abrupt stop. After all, it is a felony for an elected official to breach their sacred oath of office.

The Boys & Girls Club was denied this event as they were interested in taking it over. To carry on the tradition as giving back to the community. Now it goes to young adults who will probably never give back to this community. Wasn't this for a family in need?

From: Another one bites the dust   02/22/2010 08:06 PM
I am just sick, I'm so disapointed. I've heard through the grapevine that the Chadron Hoop Shoot is no more. The annual tradition of rallying together to help a child in need has carried on for the last decade. (Or more?) This event spotlighted our community spirit. Featuring volunteers from all walks of life brought together with the common goal of "Kids playing for Kids." This year it is now just another money maker for the college. Seriously.
