Funeral services for Denver Leonard American Horse “Wakte Glipi,” age 60, will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at the Wakpamni CAP Office near Pine Ridge, SD. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Chris Eagle Hawk.
Burial will be at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, February 19, 2018 at the Wakpamni CAP Office near Pine Ridge, SD.
Denver was a veteran in the U.S. Army.
Denver was born on July 24, 1957 in Pine Ridge, SD to Albert American Horse Sr. and Mary (Ribsman) American Horse. He made his journey to the Spirit World on February 11, 2018 at his home in Calico, SD.
Denver is survived by daughter Mary Beth American Horse of Denver, CO; siblings Albert American Horse Jr. of Rochester, NY, Gerald American Horse of Porcupine, SD, and Dale American Horse of Toawac, CO; hunka brother Nason Backs of Oglala, SD; 24 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Denver was preceded in death by parents Albert Sr. and Mary American Horse; sisters Velvedene Tobacco, Susan American Horse and Jeanette American Horse; grandparents Alfred American Horse, Susie Black Whirlwind, Alfred Ribsman and Alice Red Feather; nephew Manuel Tobacco Sr.; grandson Nathaniel Ten Fingers-Tobacco; granddaughter Samantha Tobacco; and great-grandson Dennis Tobacco.
