Mike passed away on Friday, November 17, 2017 in Hay Springs, NE.

Mike was born on April 10, 1959 in Council Bluffs, IA. Lloyd and Mary Ann Hunzeker received the joyous call that they had a baby boy and picked him up and took him home to Hay Springs, NE.

Mike attended school and graduated in 1977 from Hay Springs High School. He received a Regents Scholarship to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and joined the Air Force ROTC. Mike graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln on May 8, 1982 with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Computer Science and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.

Mike married Teri L. (Tarbutton) on June 5, 1982 in Rapid City, SD. On June 20, the two set off for Los Angles, CA to Mike’s first commission in El Segundo, CA. Mike served as a project manager for the MGT, Mobile Ground Terminal Program. Four years later the couple moved to Colorado Springs, CO and Mike served at Peterson Air Force Base. Mike was promoted to Captain and after seven and a half years decided to leave the Air Force. He went to work at IBM in Boulder, CO as a Project Manager.

Mike was an excellent carpenter, who, with the help of his family, renovated their home in Niwot, CO, calling themselves the “Some Guy and His Brother Construction Company.” In 1991, first son Chris was born. Mike wanted to raise his children in a small town with family close by, so in the fall of 1995, the family moved to Hay Springs. Mike started his own business, Sandhills Computer, and enjoyed being his own boss and working with Larel Reimann. In 1997, son Daniel was born, and their family was complete. Mike loved his boys and was so very proud of them.

Mike loved hiking and enjoyed taking the family “geo-caching.” He could always find the best hikes and drives. His home-brewed beer was a favorite among friends. He loved Nebraska football, was an avid reader, and was a great carpenter and electrician. He loved every new gadget that came out. He was so intelligent and could fix any computer or internet problem. He was a loyal friend and was always ready to stand up for what he believed in.

The Hay Springs community was very important to Mike. He previously served on the Hay Springs City Council, served as Mayor, and was an integral part of starting the new parsonage at the United Methodist Church. He helped start the Hay Springs Lego Robotics team, and then served as a team coach. Mike was a member of the American Legion and was currently serving as School Board President, Admin Council President at the United Methodist Church, and serving on the Lister-Sage Foundation Board.

Survivors include his father and mother Lloyd and Mary Ann Hunzeker, wife Teri, sons Chris and Daniel, brothers Mark (Vicki) Hunzeker and Scott (Paula) Hunzeker, brother and sister-in-law Greg and Vicki Keep, and beloved aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements for Michael Todd Hunzeker.
