Lois Marie Earl was born in Roanoke, Virginia on August 25, 1929. Her mother and father separated when Lois was very young, her mother Viola took Lois and traveled to wherever she could find work. Lois remembers her mother doing a lot of dishes and peeling bushels of potatoes to make a living—a tough life for a single mom and young daughter in the 30’s.
When Lois was about 12 years old, Viola married Ennis Pennington in Kansas. Ennis became a father to Lois. He already had five children, so Lois gained many step relatives.
Lois and Lloyd Earl were married in Gregory, South Dakota in August of 1969. They lived in Pierre, South Dakota for a couple of years while Lloyd worked for the Dustex Company which was a rental service of dust mops and door-mats for businesses. In 1971 they moved to Rapid City continuing to work for Dustex. Following Lloyd’s Mother’s death, Lloyd and Lois moved to Chadron in 1975 to care for Lloyd’s father. Lloyd states that Lois was fantastic in her care for his father. When Lloyd’s father passed away 10 years later, they remained living in Chadron where they had become active in the First Baptist Church during the years Truman Sproles was the pastor.
Lois lived at Pioneer Manor since March of 2006. She loved to “toodle” up and down the halls in her wheelchair and was especially pleased when she was given a hug or smooch on the cheek. Lloyd and his dog Daisy visited weekly.
Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
